C&NW Depot: (Satellite?, I don't have time to look for it.)
SOO+NP Roundhouse: (Satellite, the turntable was left of the pin and the roundhouse was to the right. it is now brownland.)
This town had other concrete relics: ore loading docks.

Jim Judkins posted ***Since Identified as the C&NW Coaling Tower in Ashland, WI*** I need help identifying this structure and location. While reviewing my slides and scanning them to digital, I came across this shot from the summer of 1980. Unfortunately, I did not write a location description on it. Because there appear to be ore cars near it, I'm speculating that it might be from "da Range" somewhere. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance! 🙂 Kent Rengo: Locomotive coaling tower in Ashland WI at the C&NW ore yard. It is still standing today. Kent Rengo: Could also be Escanaba MI. Dennis DeBruler: Kent Rengo I found a 1980s photo showing that the metal parts had been stripped. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/280781616123369/permalink/572145946986933/) These photos show that the metal parts made it into the 21st Century. |

Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted Someone wanted to see a photo of the C&NW roundhouse in Ashland, Wisconsin. Here is one from September 1948. Another notation on the reverse of the photo says that the train on the left is led by #2903 and is Train #116. It is a Don Steffen photo. |

Only a street view from 2008 is available. Views from that year make one appreciate how much the technology has improved since then.

Scott Wright commented on Dave's share The station was severely damaged in a fire in 2000 and was eventually rebuilt to nearly original condition. |
They have preserved a steam locomotive across the street from the depot.

Allan Erickson: Had a real bad fire in the restaurant there about 15? yrs ago and I figured the place was toast but they fixed it up. This was a 3 way depot for NP, Soo and CNW. Remember riding the CNW train there from IWD with my grandma and little brother once just for yucks.

It appears that C&NW had their own depot because this does not look the same.

SOO+NP Roundhouse

Mike Patrick posted Ashland WI 7-1-80. Michael Mornard mentioned he was modeling Ashland, thought this might be of interest SOO/NP/BN roundhouse. |
I started with a 1951 aerial because I thought the roundhouse would be still standing then. I presume that all of the industry activity near downtown were iron ore mines. I could not find the roundhouse, so...
...I got a 1939 aerial.
The turntable, and roundhouse, is obvious in this photo. Knowing where the roundhouse was, I looked again in the 1951 photo. The roundhouse appears to be extant, but the turntable is gone. I included the 1951 photo because there seems to be more iron ore mining facilities in that year.
