The first generation was this wood frame elevator.

Not sure if this little old timer was a neighbor, or maybe the original elevator for Damnen grain, but I am certain it is older. This is located in Turon Kansas on the former CRIP (Rock Island) mainline from the Chicago area to Arizona and Southern California. UP now operates this short route from the upper Midwest to the southwest.

Bob Summers posted I had never noticed the "Damnen" sign on this early slip form concrete elevator in Turon Kansas before - I just remember it as a co-op satelite location. Addition to the slip form is concrete stave bins, then the 2nd elevator with galvanized corrugated steel bins would have been added later. The concrete facilities appear to be no longer in use, but power is still hooked up to the steel, so probably is used as a harvest only seasonal elevator. Turon is on the UP, former Rock Island, mainline short route from the upper Midwest to the southwest. |
