Leesburg, FL: ACL and SAL Depots

ACL: (Satellite, it was drastically remodeled between Jan 1994 and Jan 1999.)

SAL = Seaboard Air Line

Atlantic Coast Line

This depot is fancier than the next one south in Okahumpka.

Randall Thorton posted seven photos with the comment: "I have several photos of the Leesburg ACL depot, love the architecture.  One showing the last train to stop there in 1971 photo by Dr. Young, a real rail fan in Leesburg and the doctor that delivered my brother, me and my sister.  Then some later photos from different directions and possibly the saddest of all, photos of when the depot building was moved away from the railroad right of way and remodeled with intent to convert to a restaurant.  That failed but it is used today for an auto parts store. Whoever thought this up was not a railroad guy as he put the caboose as if crashing into the depot not along side."

The east quadrangle uses the premerger railroad names of ACL and SAL whereas the west one uses the postmerger name of SCL. The 1966 west quad anticipates the 1967 merger. [DennisDeBruler]
1966 Leesburg West and 1965 Leesburg East Quads @ 24,000

Unfortunately, the 1955 quad @ 1:250,000 labels everything as SCL. But the 1958 quad correctly labels the routes. And since railroad routes get priority on the maps, that scale shows these routes.
1958 Orlando Quad @ 250,000

Except for the ACL route through Tavaras, none of these routes exist today. USGS labels the remaining ACL route as Florida Central.

The dormer for the bay window still existed in Jan 1994. But the next available image, Jan 1999, looks like today's satellite images.

The Orlando branch line of the SAL ran from Wildwood, Florida, through Orlando to Lake Charm. It was taken up many years ago. Attached are some photos of it including the Leesburg depot and photos of a portion of the tracks just east of Leesburg just prior to them being taken up. The depot building is still there.
