| Andy Zukowski posted Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and Tower in Colona, Illinois. 1911 Robert Weber: That's a CB&Q train headed towards Galesburg. Tim Shanahan shared Doug Hefty: The former CRIP (now Iowa Interstate) is today a single track and the diamond has been replaced by two switches with the IAIS switching onto and then off of the BNSF main. |
A different exposure. It looks like there is a brakeman on top of the train.

| Fans of Rock Island Lines posted Colona, Ill. About a mile outside Carbon Cliff. Rocks mains to Chicago in the foreground, C..B.Q. freight just cleared the diamond headed to Barstow Ill. Joseph Obrien shared Tim Shanahan shared Fans of Rock Island Lines posted again Less than a mile outside of Carbon Cliff, the Rocks twin mains to Chicago with C.B.Q. on the cross track. The CBQ train headed to Barstow, where he can go thru town on the Dri line or head north to Hillsdale and eventually Sterling Illinois. Colona Illinois Richard Fiedler shared |
This map was back when it was a traditional diamond crossing. I believe the reason they switched to using two turnouts was to avoid the maintenance cost of a diamond.
