Many of the old stations I have seen were along US-66. This one was along US-34.
Note only is it old enough to have glass pumps, it is just a gas station. It is not a service station. (No garage doors for service bays.)

| Iowa Road Trip posted Phillips 66 gas station in Creston, Iowa. This is one of the original Phillips 66 gas stations in Iowa and there’s a connection between Creston and the Phillips brothers who founded the Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1917. Located at: 636 New York Ave, Creston, Iowa. Brian Abeling / Iowa Road Trip Things to see while visiting Creston, Iowa: https://iowaroadtrip.net/phillips-66-station-in-creston-iowa/ Steven Wendell: My Grandpa Grimm had these at his gas station on NE corner of Boone, IA. But his was a Standard Gas Pump, hand pumped and drain the amount you want, I remember from back in the 40s. 🤔 Bruce Jones: Frank Phillips, the founder of Phillips 66 Oil Company was from the Creston area before moving to Oklahoma and getting into the oil business. The book "The Oil Man" details his life and the Birth of Phillips Petroleum. Very interesting read. |

| IowaRoadTrip "In 1931, this station was built as one of the first Phillips 66 gas stations in Iowa. It was originally about a mile away and was moved to this location to serve as a local tourist center in 1994." "So why the name Phillips 66? Of course, Phillips is from their last name, but why 66? After doing some digging online, it turns out that during road testing with a new fuel, the car was able to reach 66 miles per hour while traveling on Route 66." |

Brian Abeling / Iowa Road Trip ArchiTouring the Quad-Cities: 500 of these Tudor cottage service stations were built around the 1930s and less than 100 survive. The stations were often located in or near neighborhoods and they blended well with the house architecture of the time. They were likely designed by Phillip’s in-house architect, Clarence Reinhardt, who is more well-known for his Gull Wing modern stations of the 50s and 60s. Tanja Zambaras: We live in Creston and pass by here all the time. What is the connection between Creston and the Phillips brothers? Ironically we were friends and neighbors with Art Phillips when we lived in Shell Beach, California in the 80s and 90s and he was the grandson of one of the founding Phillips brothers. He was very rich, didn’t work and blew every dime he had on cocaine and booze and was quite a jerk. 😆😆 Duane Murren: Tanja Zambaras Matilda Gibson was his mother in law, hence the Gibson library |
