Marion Steam Shovel
John Kucko Digital
posted four photos with the comment: "Throwback Thursday: The old 1906 Marion Steam Shovel—built in Marion, Ohio—is always a neat sight when passing through LeRoy, NY. Believed to have been used in the building of the Panama Canal, it was later used in the massive quarry located across the road from its current location where it’s on display. This was also integral in helping create railroads across America, as well as repair older ones. It is believed to be the largest intact steam shovel remaining in the world today."
Bill Sick: It was rumored that it was indeed the inspiration for my favorite children's book, Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel.
It is on the schedule to visit "Popperville" this year and read the book to my grandchildren with "Maryanne in the background, listening in and smiling proudly... And without a doubt she could dig more in a day than 100 men could dig in a week!
