The closure of the LIC freight station allowed the Montauk Cutoff viaduct at Sunnyside Yard to be deactivated and demolished. This was the HQ of LIRR's freight division until the 1997 privatization with the establishment of NYA (an Anacostia subsidiary) under a operating franchise. (1/27/24) |

Tribute In Light From The Gantries. In Long Island City, Queens, New York,
Gantry Plaza State Park is a 12-acre park that centers around the restored Long Island Railroad gantries. These industrial monuments were once used to load and unload rail car floats and barges, and have been stabilized and repainted with the "LONG ISLAND" name. On the night of September 11, this area is an interesting viewing platform of the "Tribute In Light", the 88 vertical 7,000 watt xenon spotlights arranged in two columns of light to represent the Twin Towers, next to the Freedom Tower.
