Depot: (Satellite, CP repurposed the foundation)
The yard has been reduced to a short siding. I don't even see a grain elevator in this town. There was a branch that went south on the west side of the town to the CM&G. The two Milwaukee routes crossed a little to the west, but the crossing was grade separated so the junction was south of Kirkland.
I think we can see the first grain elevator in the background of the bottom photo above.

| Nicolas Thornton Photography posted As printed in the Belvidere Daily Republican on Thursday September 29th, 1960. Forty-three cars of a Milwaukee freight train were derailed in Kirkland Wednesday night when a "hotbox" developed on the 22nd car of the 125-car train.. The burnt journal caused the hub to drop off, derailing the cars. Bulldozers and railroad derrieks were busy at the scene Thursday morning attempting to clear space for the opening of one passenger track through town. Officials estimated limited service through Kirkland would be reatored by 5 p.m. Thursday. Photos are from the original b&w negatives, photographed by Fritz Meinheit, scanned and restored by us. Collection donated by Pat and Nancy Mattison. These images are shared to preserve and celebrate our town’s history. Please do not reproduce them in print or for commercial use without permission. Its still double track to Savanna IL but this was the final year that it was double track as this was the they started single tracking the main line in sections .i'm looking southeast Mark Llanuza posted again |
I tried finding the buildings in the background. I don't know why none of the street view drivers have not gone down Railroad Street. I don't think the background buildings still exist.
The depot seems to have been replaced by a MoW office.
