Muncie, IN: Progress Rail Services/EMD Plant

(Satellite)

I remember researching EMD in Muncie, but I must not have written anything. I do remember that they bought a plant that was used to make transformers. And that the loop of track is for testing locomotives.

I had saved a video in my general EMD notes, about the first passenger locomotives they are making in a long time. Some of the footage was taken inside the plant so the backgrounds are interesting. But I see this link is now broken. Bummer!

"Progress Rail Services Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caterpillar, bought EMD August 2, 2010, as a wholly-owned subsidiary. A new assembly plant was opened in Muncie, Indiana, in 2011, and the London plant was closed in 2012 because of union labor issues." [DeBruler]

Here is a great aerial view I made recently showing off the massive Progress Rail Locomotive Assembly Plant in Muncie, IN.  This building was built for Westinghouse Large Transformer division where many of our sister Overland Models Schnabel Cars were dispatched from with the large transformers.  Westinghouse broke ground here in November 1959.  Westinghouse operated here through the 1980s but struggled in later year.  In 1988 ABB took over and continued to build large transformers and continued here for several more years.  The plant stood vacant for many years until Progress Rail at Caterpillar Company purchased the plant and began assembling locomotives around 2010 or 2011 as it continues to do so today.  The locomotive assembly plant is currently served by Norfolk Southerns New Castle District located just behind the yard tracks far in the distance.  This facility would make a really neat place to model. www.overlandhobbies.com
