The Allentown Terminal Railroad Station in Allentown, Pennsylvania was built and owned by the Allentown Terminal Railroad Company in 1870. The Reading Company and Central Railroad of New Jersey leased this station and trains such as “The Queen Of The Valley, The Harrisburger and Scranton Flyer” taking passengers to Scranton PA, Harrisburg PA, Elizabeth NJ and New York City among many others. During WWI and WWII, this station was the scene of assembling troops bound for duty across the nation and the world. The Allentown Terminal Station was a “whistle stop” during President Harry Truman’s campaign in 1948. With the expanding interstate highway system, long distance bus and airline service, railroad passenger ridership declined drastically and the Reading Railroad ceased Allentown-Harrisburg service in 1963 and the Central New Jersey Railroad stopped serving Allentown in 1967. The freight station location just north of this station was demolished in 1978. After the station was closed to passengers, dispatchers for the Central New Jersey Pennsylvania Division used it until 1972 when the CNJ pulled out of Pennsylvania all together! The Lehigh Valley Railroad took over the CNJ Pennsylvania Division until the formation of Conrail in 1976! During the 70’s, the station became a victim of vandalism and fires. The bankrupt Allentown Terminal Railroad Company sold the property to the Allentown Redevelopment Board in 1978. During the 80’s and 90’s, there were several attempts to turn the station into restaurants with little success. It reopened as a nigh club in 2001 and a shooting in 2007 forced a permanent closing.

I had trouble locating this station. While looking for it on a 1964 topo map and a satellite map, I found

the railyard for the Central Railroad of New Jersey. I include the yard's satellite link in these notes because Norfolk Southern has kept most of the tracks. It is rare to find a railroad yard that is as big today as it was back in the early 20th century. 

Some times some additional labels would appear on Google Maps, and that is when I found out that the Lehigh Valley Railroad Freight Station buildings have been repurposed.
