This mine was closed in 2010. [gem] Gem specifies a location. CoalDiver (whoops, I forgot ro record the link) puts the address of record as here. Neither of these locations are near a railroad. Nor do those locations agree with sources that put Somerset Mine #60 near Cokeburg or Bentleyville. I spent a lot of time trying to find the location of the tipple, but I couldn't find it.
"Machinery, equipment and employees" were transferred from Mine #51 to transform Mine #60 into Mine 84. [CoalCampUSA]

This is the post that motivated researching this mine.
Remembering Bethlehem Mines posted Somerset Mine #60, "Taking Mining Crew in or out of mine," Ellsworth Division, 1967 https://nmihbethlehemsteel.omeka.net/items/show/372 James Torgeson shared Bethlehem Mines Ellsworth Division, 1967. Mike Repka: this must have been the one in or near Mariana Pa.? Dennis DeBruler: Mike Repka I've seen the number "58" for the Marianna mine. |
This rail loading looks different than the second photo in these notes.

Consol Energy switched the mine to longwall mining. [BureauOfMining, minedocs] The mining operation did undermine a retail nursery. [ehstoday] The mine lives on as a possible source of surface subsidence. [SurfaceSubsidence] Mining may be safer for the workers, but it is not safer for the buildings above the mines. [PublicIntegrity]
Consol Energy has three mines left in Pennsylvania. The coal is exported at Baltimore, MD. [ConsoleEnergy]
