Randolph C: Coulterville, IL: Peabody 1976-2003 Zeigler and 2004- Gateway Coal Mines

Zeigler: (Satellite)
Gateway: (Satellite, you can see the sloped conveyor go underground.)

I found these mines while looking for the Randolph Preparation Plant.  This mine is still operating. It produced 2.4m tons in 2022, and has 43m tons of reserves. [peabody]
It was started in 2005. [gem]
Since the Gateway North mine is still operating, it is noteworthy. Especially since it was started in the 21st Century.

I've noticed that modern mines don't use a hoist to remove the coal. They used a sloped conveyor instead.

A conveyor is used to carry the output of the Gateway North Mine to the preparation plant and loadout facility that was built for the Zeigler Mine. The loadout is served by the UP/MoPac Railroad.

I think these are settling ponds for the coal cleaning process of the preparation plant.

In 2008, it produced 3.2m tons. In 2010, "Peabody announced that it plans to expand yearly production capacity at its Gateway mine by 40%. The $175-million project will extend the life of the operation at least 16 years, by increasing underground operations north of the existing site and digging up around 4.5 million tons of coal a year." And the reserves would be 280m tons. [gem]

Black Beauty Coal is a subsidiary of Peabody Coal.
Directory

They have already mined quite a bit of coal.
