Conesville, OH: Lost/NKP(W&LE) Depot and Ohio & Erie Canal

(Satellite, an RV trailer uses the foundation as a parking pad.)

I got an old topo map to see where the canal was. The Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis is what we know as the Big Four.

This view not only shows the remnants of the foundation, it shows that the bridge still has a truss span.

I was surprised because the satellite image looks like the steel girder bridge that we see in the foreground of the bridge in the above view. After I fired up Google Earth and found an image with no leaves, I understood what was happening. The truss spans are over the flood plain. I wonder if a flood and logjam took out the spans over the river.

I looked on aerial photos for the depot. I could not find it on a high resolution photo or the oldest photo available. Even though the street view makes them obsolete, I'll include them anyhow because of the canal.

Treelines mark the location of the canal out of town, and I added red lines to show its path through town.
