Mark's railfanning of the KBS indicates that this elevator is rail served. But I don't see a fall protector over the rail in the satellite image. So I can no longer conclude that an elevator is not rail served if it does not have a fall protector. Now I wonder what the rules are for having a fall protector.

I don’t think there is any prohibition from NS getting in the act via KBS.
James Nobbe: All 3 carriers (CSXT, UP, KBSR) serve FS Directly. So, yes, KBSR to NS would be an option. But realistically, the only time you would ever see that is if the is a specific reason that specific grain from that specific location had to go to a NS served market regardless of price. Let me try to explain, if they are going to the poultry markets in the Carolinas, MOST of those facilities are either on CSXT or are on shortlines that connect to both CSXT and NS. Very few are strictly NS. CSXT Direct or CSXT for ACWR, CLNA, LC, etc., delivery is ALWAYS going to be cheaper than KBSR - Lafayette - NS - ACWR/CNLA/LC delivery. Grain goes through a broker - so let's say you are the broker and you just sold Perdue 6 trains of corn, Purdue is going to tell you which facilities they want that grain delivered to. Further let's say 1 is going to an NS elevator, 1 to a CSXT elevator, and 4 to short line elevators. So you'll fill that NS order with a supplier directly on NS. You fill the CSXT order with a supplier directly on CSX. Those are your cheapest freight options. That leaves the 4 trains to shortline elevators. St Anne will never go to a shortline elevator via NS. KBSR to NS to Shortline is never going to be cheaper than CSXT to Shortline.
