North Fond du Lac, WI: CN/WC/FRVR/C&NW Roundhouse and Backshops

Nick T explains in a comment below that UP never owned these shops. C&NW had sold them to a shortline (FRVR = Fox River Valley Railroad) that got purchased by Wisconsin Central. And CN bought the Wisconsin Central assets from CP after CP bought the Milwaukee Road assets.

Marty Bernard posted three photos with the comment: "[This] was at the Wisconsin Central's Shops at Fond du Lac, WI in May 1999 and is shown in Photo 1 with a diesel generator to move the table.  Photos 2 and 3 are of it earlier when it was powered by electricity from trolley poles.  Look closely at Photo 3 and you can see the three trolley wires.  The photos are by Duane Hall."

It appears that the backshops and table are still intact.

So CN has a railyard with two roundhouses. The C&NW roundhouse on the east side and Wisconsin Central roundhouse on the west side.

Brian N Amy Regal: Very cool! Wasn’t there two different yards for two different competing railroads? Hence two roundhouses. The other one is off Northwestern Avenue. Which isn’t shown here.

  1. Actually UP never owned that yard/roundhouse. CNW sold it in 1988/1990 or so to Itel who created the Fox River Valley RR (affiliated with the Green Bay & Western). The FRVR/GBW; including the Fond du Lac property above; were both purchased by the Wisconsin Central in 1993 (UP bought CNW in 1995).
