Mansfield, IL: NS/Big4/P&E vs. NS/Wabash, 4-Silo Grain Elevator and Union Depot

Tower: (Satellite, southwest quadrant.)
4-Silo: (Satellite, the town also has a typical grain elevator.)
Depot: (Satellite, northeast quadrant. They must have built a new US-150 overpass after the depot was torn down.)

P&E = Peoria & Eastern Railway

THE WABASH MANSFIELD ILL...1959
NS still operates the east P&E spoke to Champaign, the south Wabash spoke to the Wabash mainline at Bement, and the north Wabash spoke to the NKP/LEW route at Gibson City. NS also still operates the LEW route west of Gibson City through Bloomington to East Peoria.

While studying the satellite image, I noticed a skinny, square building along the connector in the southeast quadrant. It is a grain elevator with a rather different design. Did the flat walls between the silos create additional (small) bins?

At one time the depot was “L” shaped with an identical end on the P&E to service their trains but that end apparently was torn down in the late 50’s when the P&E dropped their Pekin to Indianapolis train leaving only the Wabash portion. A true Union station. The tower disappeared in the early 60’s. The N&W signal maintainer used the Wabash portion to around 1980 when the remaining building was demolished.
