I'm done for now because of a Google bug

About 2:30pm on Sep 9, 2026, when I tried adding a photo to a post, it did not work. Blogger did the upload, but the photo never appeared in the post. I tried some things to work around the problem such as a different post, a different photo, deleting an existing photo in case I was at some unknown limit, a different browser, waiting a few hours, waiting several hours, etc. Nothing worked. So, I'm giving up for now. I'll do a test each day to see if the photo upload got fixed. When fixed, I'll resume posting.

Newton, NC: 1924 Museum/Southern Depot

There is a caboose. But it is more.....the little girl in the photo is now my wife and the lady is my late mother-in-law. The station is now the home of Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum in Newton, NC.

RS-3? Nice station, a standard SR design for many years. I grew up in a town with an identical station.

Remembering the Farmers Coop Elevator at Roland, Story County, IA.

False-front combination headhouse/annex built in 1956, Mill & Elevator Service Co. 103,000-bushel capacity.

Destroyed via practice burn on 3/23/2024.

Just two surviving works by the Mill & Elevator Service Co. are left in Iowa in 2026, an annex in Leland, and a headhouse at Ogden.

I visited and photographed this elevator three times (2020, 2023, and 2024).

I wasn't surprised that the railroad was abandoned west of town in 1975, but I was surprised that it was already abandoned in 1954.

Cooperstown was near the end of a Northern Pacific route. It is now abandoned.

Luverne, ND: Lost Wood Grain Elevtors

The new elevator a few miles east in Pillsbury, ND, has a loop of track so it can load unit trains. That elevator probably made this one obsolete.

Southeast Complex- Annex built before 1963 (exact year unknown). Bushel capacity unknown.

Both complexes were demolished in July 2025.

The railroad was the Great Northern. The route is still owned by BNSF.

This town was at the end of a CB&Q branch in 1944.

But the CB&Q used to continue South. It evidently shared the GM&O Bridge across the Mississippi River.

When I saw that it used to go further south, I got an older topo map. So the grain elevator used to be close to the railroad.

Pillsbury Farmers Elevator Co. East headhouse built in 1954, Hogenson Construction Co. Bushel capacity unknown. Middle headhouse built in 1919, T. E. Ibberson Co. 85,000-bushel capacity. West headhouse built in unknown year. Bushel capacity unknown.

This complex was damaged by the derecho that went through the area in June 2025. As of my visit in July 2025 the complex was still standing, but its ultimate fate is unknown to me.

Not only does BNSF still own this route, it has a wye so that it can turn the locomotives.

I presume the long building on the right holds fertilizer. Note the white cover in the middle for a ground pile even though they have a lot of bins for storage. I think the six white bins on the left side of this view store seed.
