Today’s featured depot is the LSMS/NYC depot at Jonesville 🚂
Jonesville was settled in 1828 in Hillsdale County. “Jonesville received its first rail service when they convinced the State of Michigan to divert the Southern line from Hillsdale northwest 4 miles to town. The road then continued back west, southwest through Allen, and to Coldwater” (Station: Jonesville, MI).
Jonesville sat along the Michigan Southern Railroad’s “The Old Road” line. In 1898 a brick depot was built along this line and is how the station got the name “The Old Road” depot.
In 1869, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern (LSMS) Railway was formed from the merging of four smaller railroads - one of which was the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad. The Old Road depot served as a stopping point for the LSMS passenger train and was an active station until the 1950s.
This depot still exists and serves as a bed and breakfast called The Rooms at Grayfield.
