Photo of the damage done to the Municipal Car Ferry Terminal in Milwaukee by the car ferry CITY OF SAGINAW 31 (blt 1929).
Date of photo
1943-12-03

Because of this photo (via uwm via uwm "CITY OF SAGINAW 31 (yr. built 1929) being loaded with rail cars, parking lot to the left of the loading operation. At dock - CITY OF SAGINAW 31, background CITY OF MILWAUKEE (yr. built 1930)"), I believe the dock was the "notches" in the northwest corner of Jones Island in the topo map below. The building below appears in the right background of that photo and helped confirm the docks location. Like the GTW car ferry docks that the CITY OF MILWAUKEE was probably headed to, the Pere Marquette interchanged the freight cars with the C&NW.

Additional Historical Information
Launched in 1941, the City of Midland 41 was built in Manitowoc Wis. by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. for the Pere Marquette Railway Co. The 389-foot (LOA) vessel was designed to carry railroad cars, automobiles and passengers across Lake Michigan.
The Pere Marquette Railway ferry fleet became part of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Co. (C&O) when the two railroads merged in 1947. During the winter of 1976-1977, the ship sustained some hull damage and lost a propeller due to heavy ice.
In April 1977, the car ferry underwent repairs at the Bay Shipbuilding Co. yard in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. before returning to service. The City of Midland 41, along with the former C&O ferries Badger and Spartan, was sold to the Michigan-Wisconsin Transportation Co. in 1983.
Michigan-Wisconsin Transportation focused primarily on providing cross-lake railroad car service with passengers and autos a side business. The City of Midland 41 was laid up in 1988 after suffering boiler mount problems.
In November 1990, Michigan-Wisconsin Transportation ceased operations. The line’s three car ferries were acquired by the Lake Michigan Carferry Service (LMCS) in 1991. The new owner planned to focus exclusively on cross-lake passenger and automobile ferry service.
The Spartan came to serve as a source of parts for its fleet mates. After initially planning to operate both the City of Midland 41 and Badger, the LMCS decided to just operate just the Badger. The City of Midland 41 was maintained as a reserve vessel.
In 1997, the City of Midland 41 was sold to the Pere Marquette Shipping Co., a new company created by the owners of the LMCS. The vessel was then converted into a crane-equipped barge for use as part of an articulated tug/barge combination.
The barge was renamed the Pere Marquette 41 and paired with the tug Undaunted, in 1998. In 2020, Pere Marquette Shipping and its tug/barge combination were acquired by the Interlake Holding Co. the corporate parent of the Interlake Steamship Co.
At the same time, the LMCS was acquired by a new Interlake subsidiary, the Lake Michigan Car Ferry Co. (LMCF). Pere Marquette Shipping, Interlake Steamship and LMCF were then placed under the management of the holding company’s new Interlake Maritime Services subsidiary.

John Melcher: Nice pic! She's sitting right where the stone dock is now. Also she still comes to Milwaukee. Just as a barge though
