Alpena, MI: Roundhouse

Dave's comment:
Lake State Railway RS11 #1195 rests inside the old Detroit & Mackinac roundhouse in Alpena MI, while outside two C425's bask in the mid day sun on the north leg of the wye. 2007
This is the first interior shot I have seen of a roundhouse converted to diesel maintenance. If you look at the satellite image, you will see that the roundhouse was small enough that it did not use a turntable, just a set of turnouts.

Alpena, MI was an important hub for the Detroit & Mackinac, making the city a must see back in the 70's.  The all Alco railroad was Michigan's version of the Green Bay & Western,  making the trip around Lake Michigan all that much better.  Throw in the Mackinac Bridge between the two and you found yourself in heaven, travel wise.  Here's RS2 481 sitting by the roundhouse, along with a classic D&M caboose.  Photo taken September 20, 1979.
