Google Map's mark for the tower is east of the tower.

The coaling tower is the only surviving building from IC's steam engine servicing yard.

Dennis DeBruler It is interesting to see what the coaling tower looked like when it still had it metal parts. The man coming down the stairs gives it some scale.

John Smith posted seven photos of roundhouse ruins, to which James Aurand added this 2004 or 2005 aerial photo as a comment.

That photo allowed me to find the foundation on a satellite image. On this image, the roundhouse foundation is peaking through the trees on the right and the coaling tower is on the left.

The IC mainline goes diagonally along the south side of their engine servicing yard. Their main classification yard was northwest of the town. The Milwaukee Road curves along the north side of their yard and then crosses the river. The C&NW crossed the river and then went along the northwest side of their yard to Union Station and its terminus. This yard was at the center of Rockford's railroad hub.

Merle Althafer posted three images with the comment:
In 1886, the Illinois Central RR purchased land from the Freeport Malleable Iron Works and continued expanding its footprint in Freeport. That expansion became what was known as the railroads East Yard and shops, located southeast of the Union Depot. The bustling shops and yard remained until the 1960s. At its peak, the railroad boasted a workforce of around 1200 locals. For reference, presently, this area hosts the Stephenson Service Company (located on Hancock.) Today i found myself out recording some photos of the area. Aside for from the razed remains of the roundhouse, the coaling tower and one of the former shop buildings remain. The yard office and storage facility is what I'm sharing today. Along with it, I've included a snippet of a 1918 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of the east yard shop area. I've pointed out the shop office on the map for your reference. Please enjoy and feel free to share your stories and family photos of the area of relatives who worked for the railroad.
Douglas Lincoln: Actually the building you are showing is not Stephenson Service Co. but it is the office for the Consolidated Grain Co. and they have several big grain bins behind the office. When I was hauling grain I was in and out of that place hundreds of times over several years. They also use the rail sidings behind the office to receive and ship out grain by rail.
