Depot: (Satellite, this town has poor coverage by street view drives so I could not get a view of the building that now uses the land.)
I learned of this tower from a Jim Pearson photo. Jim caught another BNSF leading an intermodal under the tower on this CSX route.
Jim Pearson posted (source) with the comment: "November 3, 2018 – Illuminated by the early morning sun, CSX Q029 (Chicago, IL - Atlanta, GA) heads south on CSX’s CE&D Subdivision at Sullivan, Indiana, under the old C&EI coaling tower that was built in 1941 to service steam locomotives."

Robert Gibson Jr. posted Paul Moffitt took this photo of Chicago & Eastern Illinois engine 1020 at Sullivan, Indiana in 1946. Dennis DeBruler The first photo I have seen with all of the metal parts still attached. It looks like it used a skip hoist. |

Satellite (Update: May 2019 has a different image with almost no shadow.) |
I can't believe that I've driven on US-41 several times and never realized I was just a few blocks from a standing coaling tower. Neither Google nor Bing have run their Street View Vehicle in this town.

James Zimba posted Located in Sullivan Indiana, this landmark structure still provides a foreshadowing of yesteryear. It was built in 1941! Kyle Hooker shared This is why they say it's important to stamp your work. This is mine. Tate Hooker: I took this photo on my Motorola Razor back in 2007. |

Don Wtmore posted C&EI coaling tower north of Sullivan, Indiana in March 1982 Dave Ricks This photo raises more questions than it answers! Physically, I guess the coal went up a conveyer belt on the right to the "house" of machinery on top. I guess it was run by electricity, and coal cars unloaded somehow on the right. Was there one coal bin inside to serve both tracks, or was there one coal bin over each track? Socially, I wonder about the rules to operate it. How was a good or bad day at work? How could someone get in trouble by operating it incorrectly? And how is it not smudged with coal dust and soot? That's among the many other things that look strange! Don Wetmore Hopper cars unloaded coal into a pit from an elevated track on the right. A bucket ran up a track to dump it into a single large hopper compartment in the tower. A chute extended over each track from the center. The chute was lowered and a handle was pulled to release the coal. If I can find a video of the process I'll post a link. Dennis DeBruler This photo from when it still had its metal parts shows the two chutes underneath and the skip hoist on the side. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1255493367798489/permalink/2768326029848541/ |

Don Wetmore posted CSX action on the C&EI at Sullivan IN on Nov 27 1992 [I was surprised it still had the metal stairs. Then I noticed the date of 1992.] |

In Sept 2020, I got hit with a Double Doomsday. Both Facebook and Google changed their software. I said "changed" instead of "updated" because the new software is not better. In fact, Google's Blogger software is far worse except for a search function that works. For example, it has three bugs concerning photos and their captions. So I'm no longer copying photos and interesting comments from Facebook. I'm just saving the link. Unfortunately, some of the links are to private groups.

Ronald Boles posted The C&EI railroad depot in Sullivan, Indiana, was destroyed. It was demolished in 1963 after being damaged by a derailment that occurred on Saturday afternoon, November 2, 1963. A South Bound train 57 derailed due to a rung journal. I was a Signal Maintainer in Sullivan at the time, My High Rail Truck was parked at the Freight House and was not touched. Fortunately it was on a Saturday and No one was in the Station. The only Defect Detector was at Cayuga Ind. 65 miles away. I use to go in and listen to Paul Harvey at Noon. Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad Historical Society shared with the comment: "Old depot at Sullivan, Indiana." Mike Kelly: The architectural detail on the roof above the bay window certainly is one of a kind. Not strange, not bizarre, just unique in a nice way. |

There are two rectangles parallel to the tracks. Since the northern one has a bunch of "bumps" on the roof. I choose that one. When I saw that it was near Depot Street, I was confidant with my choice.
