This was the Cincinnati, Richmond & Fort Wayne Railroad, which, like GR&I, was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Company, and later the Pennsylvania Railroad, etc. GR&I ran south from Mackinaw City, Michigan, and ended at a connection to the PFW&C at Junction tower near Swinney Park in Ft. Wayne. CR&FW’s track extended south from Adams Junction in New Haven to Richmond. Trains operating on them ran on PRR’s PFW&C track between Junction and Adams. PRR had GR&I lease and operate CR&FW for the first 50 years. With trackage rights on PFW&C and PRR or its other subsidiaries, it appeared that GR&I operated from Mackinaw City to Cincinnati. In later years the trains carried PRR marks, but the timetables said GR&I. It was good marketing strategy. PRR operated CR&FW 1921-1927, when CR&FW was merged into PRR’s PCC&SL (“Pan Handle”). PCC&SL was merged into PRR’s Philadelphia, Baltimore & Washington RR in the 1950s. PC and CR owned everything from and after 1968. It’s a beautiful building. This photo was taken by Sid Pepe in 1961. |
