Steven Holding: There was a mine-mouth coal generating power house and car barn at the same location until the boiler house burned which resulted in the McKinley interests taking control. They mined coal here until 1942 if i remember right.

According to the state records, it operated until 1949.

Dennis DeBruler: Thanks for identifying the location. It looks like the tipple of the Union Coal Mine is peaking over the left end of the buildings.

The "Union Coal Mine" (also known as Union Mine or Union 74) in Peru, Illinois, was a significant underground mine located near the Westclox factory, active from around the late 1800s into the mid-20th century
