Chicago & North Western Historical Society posted Someone wanted to see photos of Rapid City. South Dakota. Here are two of the many we have at the archives of our C&NW HS. The larger one is a C&NW company photo of which there are many reprints. The smaller one looks east and was donated to our society by Ray Buhrmaster. Mike Bartels: Rapid City was demolished in January 1980. https://www.newspapers.com/.../rapid-city.../168344855/ Rick Schmidt: Chicago & North Western Historical Society do you have a city map showing where this was located??? This building was gone long before I was born, I love seeing these pictures and have an idea where this is from the land marks. |

Tom Edwards comments on Rick's comment Here's a piece of a Sanborn fire insurance map that shows where the station was located. Michael Decker: Tom Edwards What year is that map? Tom Edwards: Michael Decker 1903. The Library of Congress does list 10 maps for Rapid City. Here's a link: https://www.loc.gov/collections/sanborn-maps/?fa=location_state:south+dakota%7Clocation_city:rapid+city |

Tom Edwards commented on Rick's comment And here's that location today. X marks the spot. |
This photo agrees with the 1923 Sanborn Map. I wonder if there was a different depot in 1903.

Obviously the old grain elevator is on the right. And on the left is the feed mill.

I wonder if the feed mill repurposed a flour mill because most feed mills don't have such a big building. Also note the old elevator in the center of the complex. And the covered hopper indicates it gets rail service. The tracks that remain in the city were C&NW, and they are now the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad (RCP&E). The abandoned Milwaukee tracks were a block north.
