Depot: (
Satellite, it was torn down and replaced by a post office)
Courthouse: (Satellite, I used this to correlate the 1962 topo map with today's map)

Beatrice Area Railroad Enthusiasts posted Union Pacific depot Grand Island, NE 1931. Mike Bartels: Demolished in 1967 to make way for a new post office, which was torn down in the fall of 2022. Koehler Hotel in the background, demolished in 1970. |
I think this is a comparable view. And now, even the post office is gone. I wonder what they plan on building here. Whatever it is, I'll bet it won't look as nice as the depot. An elegant event and restaurant space would probably be better for the town's economy.
I checked out the courthouse because I wondered if it was still standing. The roundhouse is gone, but the railyard is still used. Although, according to a satellite image, the southern tracks hold hoppers for the grain elevator.
Fortunately, the courthouse is still standing.
Looking along the tracks, I found this grain elevator. It looks like it is rail served. I saw a bunch of covered hoppers setting on a siding. But I was not able to find a locomotive owned by the elevator. Those are the longest storage buildings I remember seeing.
It looks like they can unload hoppers. I wonder what product is received.
Given the fall protector and the piles of grain on the ground, this is where they load hoppers.
You can tell we are in feedlot country. This is the first time I've seen a bid for live cattle on a grain elevator's website.
