I wonder if the white dots on the northeast part of town were grain storage bins.

Collapse of the Ed Metzger & Co. Elevator at Gerlaw, IL, 1911.The History of Warren County, IL, 1877 mentions that an elevator had yet to be constructed at Gerlaw due to the lack of grain for trade from area farmers. Gerlaw was platted in 1871 when the railroad was built through the area. According to the 1872 Atlas of Warren County, IL just a scale and a set of corn cribs made up anything resembling grain storage facilities for the station. The flathouse/warehouse elevator, shown below, is believed to have been built between 1878 and 1881.During the evening of March 22, 1911, the flathouse/warehouse elevator collapsed, spilling the nearly 4,200-bushels of wheat, oats, and corn. The roof split in half and the rest of the structure leaned to the southwest coming to rest on the siding. Everyone working inside at the time made it out before the collapse. The remains of the old elevator were cleared away and construction on a new 20,000-bushel iron-clad elevator commenced on the site. The Burrell Engineering & Construction Co. of Chicago was the contractor. The second elevator is still standing today and is the last wooden elevator in Warren County.1st and 2nd photographs courtesy of "The Grain Dealers Journal" vol. 26, no. 7, April 10, 1911, pp. 517.3rd and 4th photos courtesy of Wesley Peters.
