David Cantrell posted two photos with the comment: "CN Edgewood Yard building has a new coat of paint. Second photo shows former B&O right of way facing towards Flora [Southeast]."
John Petit: no more Sandstone & Chocolate Brown? [See Bob's photo below as to what these colors looked like.]

The grain elevator is fairly big, and it is owned by ADM.

I would expect ADM would want rail service. And the elevator does have a fall protector. But the rail siding is very short.

Looking closer, the fall protector is over a driveway instead of the siding. So I guess ADM does not have rail service.

Just southwest of town is the junction for the Edgewood Cutoff. I think it is weird that two double-track routes funnel down to a one-track mainline. (The northern track in the upper-right is the siding for the elevator.)

Update:
Effingham County Courthouse Museum Effingham IL posted Good morning! Today's picture takes us to Mason Township and the village of Edgewood, Illinois. This picture shows a depot at Edgewood. It's very hard to see but at the bottom left of the picture it says Edgewood Depot and Passenger Freight House ICRR. It's written in white making it very hard to see. I'm guessing this one to be circa 1900 to 1910. I know that there was another depot for the other railroad, the B & O, that crossed through Edgewood. According to one of our followers, this depot pictured was just north of where the B&O crossed the IC on the east side of the tracks I'm sure that those men standing by the depot were local, but sadly I have no idea who they are. My suggestion to all of you would be to label your pictures. We literally have thousands of pictures at the museum that have no names on them. Wherever you may be, I wish you a wonderful day! IC must have downsized and moved into the B&O depot before 1938 because I could not find the early 20th Century depot on this aerial

Effingham County Courthouse Museum Effingham IL posted Good morning! Today’s picture takes us to Mason Township and the village of Edgewood, Illinois. This real picture postcard by Wm. Faulk Publisher shows Union Station in Edgewood. This depot was built in 1904 and I think this postcard is from around that time up to 1910. It served as a depot for the Illinois Central as well as for the B&O railroad which crossed the IC tracks at Edgewood. This was at a time when the Illinois Central had two tracks running north and south. There were freight trains and passenger trains through there on a regular basis. In 1923, the B&O ran to Flora and to Shawneetown and north to Beardstown, Illinois. At that time the B&O had two passenger trains northbound and two passenger trains southbound. By 1941, there was only one northbound and one southbound passenger train on the B&O. If you look on the right side of the postcard, between the two buildings you can see a freight car on the other tracks. The tracks for the B&O have since been removed. There are no passenger trains that stop in Edgewood any longer but by looking at this postcard, we can remember those “glory days” of trains in Edgewood. Wherever you may be, I wish you a wonderful day! Richard Fiedler shared Raymond Barr: Of course, in the late 1920s Edgewood would become the jumping off point of the Illinois Central "Edgewood Cutoff" which runs down southeast Illinois to Metropolis and on over into Kentucky. |
