The predecessor station to the current Pennsylvania Station. It was located slightly south of the current station.

Hey, gang, take a gander at Penn Station, the rather ornate building at right.
Built in 1890, this station was demolished in the 1930s to make way for the Penn Station we all know today.
Of special note in this photo are the raised tracks. Originally they were at ground level, but were elevated around 1901 or so.
This station faced Market Street, a short hop east of what is now McCarter Highway.
Market Street continues east under the tracks, while Ferry is off to the right. 
By the way, this was the second Penn Station. The first one was built in the latter 1800s at roughly the same location. There are no photos of it.

Recently I was looking at an interior shot of the waiting room at the old Penn Station on Market Street when I I noticed a strange, circular contraption to the left of center in the picture.
At first I had no idea what this was. But then it dawned on me: It was a round steam radiator used to warm large areas.
These circular heaters were popular in the late 19th century into the 20th century, especially in Europe.
Of course I don't know what those pots - on the floor in front of the benches - were used for.
Spittoons, maybe?

Newark Penn was the beneficiary of an $190 million restoration about 10 years ago. Did a wonderful job
