The Milwaukee Road's shops at Dubuque Iowa were among the largest in the state and handled repairs for 5 divisions. They covered 10 acres (not including the 20-acres of yards) and employed over 1,000 workers.

John Carr: Is that a 4-4-0 locomotive? If so, it must have been pretty old in 1941.
Ted Schnepf: The 4-4-0 was used on a connecting train from Dubuque to either Green Island where it connected with the Iowa division or to Savanna where it also connected with the Kansas City division. In 1941 the connection was at Green Island with passenger trains on the Iowa division. So I just had a short trip from Dubuque to Green Island.

I put a red rectangle around the freight house. The building to the east of it is the only decent candidate I found for the depot. But the roof doesn't match the photo. Jefferson and Washington Streets down by 8th Street were added after the passenger and freight operation was torn down. And the remaining track was moved closer to the river.

This is the railyard area.
