Dennis DeBruler commented on Andy's post The oldest topo map I could find is 1940, and it doesn't even have an "Old RR Grade" marking. I think this north/south double treeline, https://maps.app.goo.gl/yapHUJDqdjuJUxha8, is where the RoW was. It appears that the depot was still standing four years after abandoment and that it was in the nortwest quadrant of the tracks and Main Street. 1938 aerial photo Kendel Robinson: Dennis DeBruler never knew that it was part of the PD&E. I ran that line many times years ago by that time was ICG Mattoon to Peoria. Only got to make one trip Mattoon to Evansville and by that time it was abandoned Mattoon to Newton so we ran Mattoon down the mainline to Effingham and across to Newton on the Indianapolis sub and on down to Evansville. I’m sure the old Indianapolis sub had a name before ICG/IC it was referred to as the Hy-Dry. |

Dennis DeBruler commented on Andy's post Part of the corporate history of this route was the "Chicago Division" of the PD&E. The source of the map is Rogers post, https://www.facebook.com/groups/107487346273789/posts/930478917307957/, from PD&E notes, https://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/.../peoria-decatur.... Some of the comments on the PD&E notes provide more history of this route. The PD&E became part of the Illinois Central. |
