Scranton, PA: Vacant/Central Railroad of Penna Freight House and CNJ Depot

(Satellite)

Central Railroad of Penna was part of Central Railroad of New Jersey.

That is a very fancy building for a freight station.

Tim Stuy: And unless you were going to some intermediate point, no one in Scranton would take the CNJ to get to the New York metropolitan area when the Lackawanna would get you there several HOURS quicker!

I took these pics yesterday. I've never noticed this place before. It's the former Central Railroad of New Jersey Freight Station, located in Scranton.
The freight station was built in 1891 and served as the western terminus for the Central Railroad of New Jersey line, which originated in Jersey City, New Jersey.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 yet there it sits unused for decades.
John Krupa: A while back they put some money into it, new roof and cleaned it up then abandoned it again. I've been looking at the building for 48 years around here.
Tim Marsh: I wanted to purchase it about a decade ago and was told it wasn't for sale , so I guess just let it sit until it crumbles to the ground like most of Scranton has done already ,just like all the beautiful historical buildings on Lackawanna ave. Which c ould of been restored to draw more people to area to actually see part of history instead implode every building for a new mall that lasted about a decade ,doesn't sound like a fair trade off does it . But that's the intelligence of Scranton politics.
