Roseville, IL: Lost/CB&Q Depot

(Satellite, I think today's concrete silos stand on the depot's land. It appears that they removed the silos that we see in the photo below.)

This photo is a reminder that they used to ship grain in boxcars.

John Carson: I know that Andy, and others know this, but this is a little explanation for those that arn't familiar with this branch. Roseville was the northern end of the branch line that ran from Bushnell to Monmouth, through Walnut Grove and Swan Creek. The tracks between Monmouth and Roseville were removed in the 1940s. This was part of the Beardstown Sub. at the end. It is interesting to think that you could have at one time boarded a train in Galesburg, gone through Rio, Alexis, Monmouth, Roseville, Swan Creek, Walnut Grove, Bushnell, Adair, Table Grove, Vermont, Ray, and ended up in Rushville. It was abandoned after the BN merger, and the tracks removed in the 1980s. This is one of those now long gone routes I would have like to have had a Engine Cab ride on.
Randy Chambers: Originally the line from Bushnell through Roseville Alexis and back on the main line at Rio was Rockford Rock Island in St Louis Railway. The cb&q acquired it

JeffandLinda Dirks: Was friends with the 2nd trick operator at Bushnell. On July 30th in 1975 the BN ran a work train there at Bushnell. When finished the crew was instructed to make a Roseville turn. Two teeks prior there was a derailment between
Swan Creek and Roseville. The elevator needed a switch since it had been two weeks. Walt the friend of mine talked to the crew if I could ride with them. They said it was OK. 10 mph the 16 miles up to Roseville and back with some spots slower than 10 mph. Finally after several derailments the elevator stopped shipping in 1977. They were the main shipper. The line hung on until 1981 and was abandoned. The last train to Roseville was 1979 bringing 2 loads of lumber for Alexander lumber. Of course the train derailed south of Roseville. The only other business was fertilizer plants at Walnut Grove and Swan Creek. They would receive occasional cars. I had talked to the owner at Walnut Grove who had cars coming but unloaded them at Avon. The Roseville line had been abandoned while the cars were coming. The things that went on with railroads that were trying to abandon the line. The Roseville line had 75 Pound rail and covered hoppers weighing 130 tons were too big plus no maintenance on track.

Thanks for explaining the route. Otherwise, I would have missed the "Rose V." abbreviation on this map. https://collections.carli.illinois.edu/.../knx_rail/id/298
John Carson: Yep. Interesting that thy showed Swan Creek but not Walnut Grove on that map. Wlnut Grove was a busy place with two elevators and stores. It also shows Larchland and Epperson, which was basically a siding and some houses.
