| David Kennedy commented on a post This is the C&A tower looking North. I don't have a date. George Lane is the owner of this photograph. You can see the IC telegraph line pole crossing the C&A line in the background. |

| Andy Zukowski posted ICG Crossing, Pontiac, Illinois 1984 The Illinois Central Railroad built the Pontiac District branch in 1881. The former ICG right-of-way ran east to west across the main GM&O tracks on the northeast side of Pontiac. The tracks at this intersection featured a "diamond" (a crossing where two railways intersect). Today, the former ICG right-of-way has been largely removed. Photo by Barry Lennon David Kennedy: I believe this is looking west toward rooks creek, graymont, Flanagan, etc. That area, with the fuel tanks and assorted tanks, was called Gasoline Alley by Pontiac locals. It is now JB Lee Trucking. The [IC] depot would be on the left behind the camera. [So the diamond would be with the GM&O.] Mark Stoeckel: The station would be behind and to the left. The largest customer (after the merger with the GM&O) in Pontiac was behind and to the right. It was (and still is, a printing company, but no longer served by rail. After the Alton route was upgraded to “High Speed” rail all remaining trackage was abandoned. The diamond had been removed in earlier years and the printed plant was serviced from the former GM&O trackage using the connection looking forward curving to the left. BTW - I worked at the printing company for 291/2 years. It had numerous years[owners] over the years. Morton Printing, Printing Corporation of American, American Can, City National- West, WA Krueger, Krueger/Ringier, Ringier, RRDonnelley, LSC, and currently Sheridan Printing Kendel Robinson: Mark Stoeckel that was a lot of name changes. So it was a Donnelly plant at one time. There was a RR Donnelly plant on the ICG IC CN main line just north of Mattoon for years. It was a pretty hot important business at one time. They got 12 to 14 box cars of paper 6 or 7 days a week. Towards the later years they were having to call the railroad almost everyday to see when they were going to get their cars. Now shut down saddening to me. Not because of the railroad but due to our now totally screwed up world, my opinion and the internet which I believe killed so many jobs and China and Mexico. Mark Stoeckel: Kendel Robinson - I traveled to many RRD plants in the 8 years Pontiac was Donnelley plant. RRD bought Ringiers Small Business Group (Pontiac, Mendota, & Senatobia, MS) for 2 reasons. 1) to diversify ito the short run BtoB print sector 2) with the closing of Lakeside Press in Chicago, to move the electronic prep to Pontiac. In Pontiac we processed files for the Gravure plants (all since closed, Mattoon among them). |
So this is looking in the direction opposite of Andy's photo, and that is the IC depot and water tower.
