Trent Briggs posted South Freeport, Illinois. CGW John Samuel: It's a right-of-way the state should of kept. Snaking it's way from South Freeport all the way to Galena through the hills of unglaciated NW Illinois, including the Winston Tunnel. That had to be a very expensive route to get at grade. The Illinois Central (now CN) avoided most of this terrain by going north at Lena, following a ridge line and "dropping" into Galena. Carl J. Marsico: John Samuel What benefit would the state derive from this route? If any line should have been saved, it would be the IC Charter line. Richard Fiedler shared |
