Since the mine started in 1891, I started with the oldest topo map available, 1892.

But then when I could not find the interurban railroad that I knew used to go along the north side of the river, I remembered that electricity had barely been developed in 1890. So I got a 1916 topo. This shows the CO&P interurban.

The mine that is marked on the topo map is 2704 according to the ISGS map above.

The topo maps clearly show the river bluffs. I've read there were a lot of coal mines around Marseilles because they could see seams of coal as outcrops in the bluff. So, all they had to do was dig sideways into the bluff.
