This is what the Santa Fe Railroad's station and office building at Chillicothe looked like back in the 1920's.

I knew this was a crew change town during the steam era. According to Matt, it was a crew change location well into the diesel era.

Matt McClure Spent many hours out at "Chili" taking photos. The best were the Z trains that had the crew move on and off the train on the fly. Now the run is all the way to either Fort Madison or Galesburg. And no more Amtrak either, sadly. Miss Amtrak more in Streator where the town had multiple signs proclaiming, "A proud Amtrak Community."

Michael Buckley My father worked as a conductor and we went on passenger trains out of there . One time they had Dispatchers upstairs / lots of clerks and passenger waiting room in middle . They had a track on north side they unloaded Company material . Was a nice depot sad when it burnt . Night it caught on fire my dad said a car man saved the pay checks out of clerks drawer . It was an old building, when it started it burnt quickly . The car man was a hero for everyone that night . They moved everyone over to the Brown brick building south on the mains . It had been a hotel for the Chicago& ft Mad Engs

David Jordan: View looks east toward the Illinois River. For those unfamiliar with Santa Fe history in Chillicothe, this is the depot that was destroyed by fire on June 13, 1963. The double track mainline was out of picture at right. A railroad clubhouse on the south side of the mainline was remodeled and used as a depot through July 31, 1996 when both Amtrak's eastbound and westbound Southwest Chiefs stopped here for the final time before being rerouted.

Bryan Smith The action shots have to be my favorite. Real cowboys, leaning out of a moving train and trying to make that perfect connection. Like a major league pitcher and catcher.
Don N Jane Hall The part of this that worried me the most - besides a large chunk of metal coming at you at a speed much faster than you can run - was that the hoop I was holding would bounce off the front of the locomotive and the trainman would miss it. This never happened, but it was always a thought in the back of my head. D
Marty Bernard I've handed up orders to fast moving trains. Fun and a little scary.
Jay Holland At least the sides of the train were washed. Similar to the BN E's in the later years of commuter service, the nose was missed.
Marty Bernard The car washer did the sides and nobody cared enough to do the front manually.

The roundhouse (yellow) was a quarter of a circle. The depot (blue) was east of Benedict Street.
