Deshler, OH: (DR) Tower: B&O vs. B&O, Depot and Freight House

There is an informal railroad park in the southwest quadrant of the junction. I put some money in their donation slot because it was nice to have close, legal access to the facilities. I took a lot of pictures because I walked all the way around the junction. But rather than photo bomb this posting, I include just a view from the railpark. The depot is on the left and the tower is on the right.

David Andrew Wieting: DR controlled the north south mainline, as CTC territory, whereas the Akron Division mainline was still controlled by dispatchers in Akron, through the towers. The Toledo to Cincy mainline was and remains very busy, and it was used as a way to eliminate much of the St Louis Line, much as in the same way CR used the Fort Wayne Line to downgrade the Panhandle mainline between Columbus and Pittsburgh.

DR tower was a tower in its earlier years. B&O switch it to dispatcher's office.. not sure when..

We missed #InternationalCatDay on Tuesday, so here's a fine Chessie System action view by John Bjorklund at Deshler, Ohio, where B&O GP40-2 4361 leads a southbound freight on September 15, 1979. The classic signals are still in use today, and no doubt there will be plenty of railfans visiting Deshler before and after Summerail this Saturday, August 12, in nearby Marion. (Bjorklund-16-11-12)
Mark Ottesen: I still see the former B&O position light signals when I watch the Deshler cameras on Virtual Railfan. It is amazing CSX hasn't replaced them.
Thomas M Dupee: Mark Ottesen The CPLs on this route were rebuilt and some were replaced in 1991 along with track circuitry being upgraded to electricode (digital signal coding transmitted through the rail, eliminating lineside poles). At this time, CSX was still maintaining signal systems relative to the historic route. This was last time B&O legacy CPLs were used for a major project.
Soon, CSX would decide to employ C&O style Color-Light signals throughout former Chessie System territory whenever signal system re-design or replacement was warranted, resulting in a mish-mash of signals encountered in former B&O territory. e.g. signal 120 east of Auburn, Indiana.
Later, CSX would decide to standardize on Color-Light signals using Seaboard aspect logic, which differs from C&O aspect logic. As a locomotive engineer, you dare not confuse the two. It could prove fatal!

John Rutter I forgot to note, the train in the pic is going in reverse! It was a nearly two mile long freight that turned south into a siding but didn't fit, Two north bound trains were already on the main and this one had to back up about three miles to clear.

A "Friday Flashback"...
...to July, 1987 in Deshler OH. A northbound intermodal train, behind what was then quite unusual Canadian Pacific power, heads north on the Cincinnati to Toledo line, crossing the east-west Akron-Chicago main line in front of the depot. My memory for the particulars of this event 30 years ago is not clear, and I do not recall whether this was some kind of detour or reroute, a one time move, or something else. I do remember that it was a notable event, and several others had descended upon Deshler that morning to record the train's passing. Photo by Mark Hinsdale

This was from 04/08/2024 during the solar eclipse here in NW Ohio. Sun was about halfway covered when the CSX LA dispatcher lined up an empty ethanol into the west siding just south of Deshler, OH. The train would eventually go around the SW connection in Deshler to head to Chicago, hence why a "Medium Approach Slow" indication is showing.

Robert Jordan: Tom Bell switch is aligned for siding. Not an expert but what I saw on these signals they do not have a diverging but the slow seems to imply that.
Bill Hudran: Robert Jordan the signal indicates that the train is lined for the diverging route. The Medium Approach Slow with the Medium meaning Medium speed through turnouts, crossovers, sidings and power operated switched. The Approach Slow portion means proceed approaching next signal not exceeding Slow speed. https://signals.jovet.net/rules/CSX%20Signal%20Rules.pdf

Good ol' Deshler 
A pair of elephant style UP engines run west on the Willard Subdivision as they cross the interlocking over the Toledo Subdivision at Deshler. The old B&O depot still remains after reports of it to be torn down... the usual business of things.
