Tipton, IN: NS/NKP/LE&W Depot and Railyard

(Satellite)

One of the north/south routes of the Lake Erie & Western crossed the east/west route of the LE&W in this town. The depot is in the southwest quadrant of that crossing. See "Surprised by a NKP diesel and Indiana Transportation Museum" for more information on the LE&W.

Joseph Tuch Santucci posted three photos with the comment: "More interesting skies and lighting offered me these opportunities to capture the railroad depot in Tipton. While it’s glory days as a passenger depot have long since passed, Norfolk Southern continues to use this depot as the home base for a local freight assignment as well as a maintenance of way base."
Bruce B. Reynolds: Lake Erie and Western/NYC/NKP/N&W?NS' giveaway is that street parallel to railroad is Erie Street; LE&W had its shops there.
David L White: Tipton was the terminal until about 1933, when the NKP moved it to Frankfort.

A satellite caught a locomotive parked on the connector track.

The railyard that is west of town still has all of the tracks that it had in 1960.

Can’t get much more winter than this, the Pennsylvania heritage unit and the old Tipton Nickel Plate Road depot still used by Norfolk Southern, but unfortunately not for passenger trains. And the slightly crooked whistle post adds a nice touch.
