Farmdale, IL: TP&W Depot and Junction Tower: TP&W vs. NKP (LE&W) + Pennsy

Today: (Satellite, the TP&W route was moved to create a grade separation and reduce the curve.)
In addition to the TP&W, the roads have also changed a lot in this area. See the aerial photo at the bottom of these notes. The tower was on the east side and the depot was on the west side of the TP&W tracks.

We’ve been on a the road quite a bit with Mr Grassel.  But why confine ourselves to roads?  Let’s get on the rails with Mr Grassel’s volume more broadly titled Transportation.

Richard Fiedler: I’ve seen this before. The Lake Erie and Western, today’s Norfolk Southern is in the left foreground. The Vandalia Railroad (Pennsylvania RR) is on the right and the Toledo Peoria and Western runs left to right between the tower and depot and crosses both.

I had to go back to 1927 to find the Pannsy tracks you mentioned in the base post. It appears that Pennsy had a branch that terminated at this junction. 1927/55/ Peoria Quad @ 62,500

I presume it was one of the long rectangles on the west side of their eastern route through here. I looked in the street running part and did not find a rectangle along the tracks that was long enough to be this depot.

Cincinnati, OH: Abandoned/C&O Cheviot Railyard

(Satellite, a lot of the big box stores are built on railyard land.)

Dave Frey posted two photos with the comment: "This is the C&O Cheviot yards roundhouse circa 1948. Photos I scanned from the Cincinnati Railroad Club archives. Cheviot is a neighborhood on the West side of Cincinnati. This yard ceased operation around 1980. This is all big box shopping...Sad."
Gary Maidment: I like the funnel on the smokestack, presumably to collect any cinders and direct them safely into the gondola.
b: Gary Maidment Yes, this facility was near a neighborhood. They didn't want the smoke and ash coming down on the neighbors.

This aerial shows that it was in the east quadrant of the crossing of the tracks and 3rd Street.

But Andy's photo doesn't have 3rd Street next to the depot. So I got a photo closer to the timeframe of the photo.

This 1970 photo shows that the depot with a dormer was still in the east quadrant of the crossing of the tracks with 3rd Street.

I got a newer aerial to confirm that the old depot had been replaced with the shack.

This is a rare example of an elevator that has a conveyor over the mainline of a railroad. But this is not a Class I railroad. I think it is IAIS. I don't think the elevator is rail served.
