In Search Of...Part 229
The Rock Island tried their best to modernize, replacing old wood frame depots with ARMCO prefab structures.  Henry, IL  got one of those replacements around 1972.  The depot was large enough for the needs of the agent at this busy traffic location.  As you can see, he personalized the structure, having saved the old depot wooden sign and also adding the "monogramless" screen doors!  A decal finalized the detail.  The building outlasted the railroad but was removed after 2006 when the line was purchased and renovated by new owner Iowa Interstate.

I once flagged the northbound Peoria Rocket at the old wooden Henry depot in the early morning before the agent came on duty. The old depot was a classic design with a double bladed semaphore train order signal. I well remember the engineer giving me a toot on the diesel’s horn in response to my waving the small red cloth flag provided for flagging passenger trains. I’ll take that old depot over its bland replacement any day!

The topo map was not much help.

This aerial shows that it was in the east quadrant of the crossing of the tracks and 3rd Street.

But Andy's photo doesn't have 3rd Street next to the depot. So I got a photo closer to the timeframe of the photo.

This 1970 photo shows that the depot with a dormer was still in the east quadrant of the crossing of the tracks with 3rd Street.

I got a newer aerial to confirm that the old depot had been replaced with the shack.
