Erie Canal Overview
 |
nycanalmap From 1856 through 1917 the drydocks at Chittenango were a center for canal boat building and repair. Now restored, you'll see three 100-foot long stone and timber dry docks, a replica canal boat, and exhibits related to life on the canal. Blacksmith demonstrations and classes offered. The site is located within the Old Erie Canal State Park along the towpath Erie Canalway Trail. Bike and kayak rentals are available or bring your own to explore the park. |
This was a boat building and repair facility. Two of the three graving docks that were used for repairs have been restored.
They have a replica boat near the canal.
The hull is solid on the canal side, but on the park side it has openings so that it is easier to see what is inside.
The line shaft in the center by the ceiling indicates that they used to have some old-fashioned machine tools in their workshop.
To the left of the graving docks is the shed that shelters the boat. Is that the sunken boat just north of the shed?
