Renton, WA: Black River Junction

Dan Olah posted six photos with the comment:
Black River Jct was located about 6 miles south of Seattle, on the outskirts of Renton, WA. This tower was built in 1914 and was operated by the Oregon & Washington Railway and Navigation (Union Pacific). The Northern Pacific's Seattle-Portland main crossed the UP. Great Northern had trackage rights on the line. From the east, and heading north was the Pacific Coast RR, a local coal hauling railroad. (The PC was purchased by Great Northern in the 1950s.) The Milwaukee Road had trackage rights on the Pacific Coast from the east and north to Seattle. Milwaukee also had a shared the UP line south to Tacoma. That's trains from five railroads. If that wasn't interesting enough the Milwaukee lines were electrified through here. The tower operated long enough to see the appearance of Burlington Northern and the disappearance of Milwaukee Road. The tower was demolished in the late early 1980s.The first 2 photos are of the tower, an early undatred photos and one taken in the 1970s. The remainder of the photos are of Black River's model board and interlocking mechanism on display at Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie WA (www.trainmuseum.org)
