John Harker posted Mike Guss captured this Milw (SOO) west bound freight approaching the BN diamond or crossing at Grand Crossing on the northeast side of La Crosse, Wisconsin on April 17, 1987. Three SD40-2s 161, 189 and patched 6304 were the power for this train. This view looks toward the northeast. I scanned and edited this image with Photoshop from an original Kodak Kodachrome slide in my collection. Kevin Kriigel: worked on that very compensator, the pipeline went under the B N tracks sealed in 4 inch pipe with collars that was filled. with alcohol so it would not freeze ! |

SD40-2 6918 with GP40 3034 were pulling this train north into the or through the yard. Looking back to the bluffs in the southeast, it looked like a hazy, gloomy day. I scanned and edited this image with Photoshop for color and contrast. |
Cerita Sakura posted La Crosse - Grand Crossing Canadian Pacific's former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad mainline crosses BNSF's former Chicago, Burlington and Quincy mainline on four railroad diamonds where the two double tracks cross. With the advent of the Bakken oil boom, BNSF built 4 miles of double track through La Crosse in 2015. BNSF carries crude oil from the Bakken fields in North Dakota and Montana, bound for refineries to the east and south. This greatly increased rail traffic through La Crosse. Just north of the crossing is BNSF’s North La Crosse Yard and crew change point. The 262 mile BNSF Aurora Subdivision runs St. Croix Subdivision in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to the Chicago Subdivision in Aurora, Illinois. It is part of the Chicago, Illinois, to Seattle, Washington, BNSF Northern Transcon. The original line created by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad ran out of Aurora, Illinois to Oregon, Illinois. In 1885, the line was continued from Oregon to connect to St. Paul, Minnesota. The Canadian Pacific Tomah Subdivision runs 103 miles from La Crosse, WI in the west to Portage, WI in the east. The line crosses the Mississippi River between La Crescent, MN and La Crosse. Junctions in La Crescent lead to the River Subdivision to the north and the Marquette Subdivision to the south. East of Portage, the rails continue as the Watertown Subdivision. Interstate 90 runs roughly parallel to the rail line. The Tomah Subdivision was previously the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road). The Soo Line took it over in 1986 before Canadian Pacific did so in the 1990s. |
By today's standards, two tracks for each railroad is a big crossing.
