Mahanoy Plane, PA: East and West Bear Ridge Coal Mines

East: (Satellite)
West: (Satellite, "It was very close to where Rick’s Refrigeration is today.")

Both mines were started in 1863.
The railroad through here is the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern/Reading.

East Bear Ridge Colliery at the eastern end of Mahanoy Plane. The highway between Mahanoy Plane and Maizeville went right through the breaker/ Concrete foundation of breaker can still be seen alongside the highway about a quarter mile past MP.

Various companies mined multiple viens from a tunnel under the mountain between 1863 and a breaker fire on Aug 23, 1910. 4,500,000 tons of coal had been extracted. A new operation started in 1915 and had shipped 6,093,317 tons as of 1928.

West Bear Ridge Colliery

Here's a picture from Mahanoy Plane. But it says West Bear Ridge Colliery. I guess there was a West Bear Ridge and an East Bear Ridge.

Mining started in 1836 and 3,121,690 tons were shipped as of 1928.
