Vandalia, IL: IC Depot and Freight House

(Satellite)

Fun Fact: Vandalia was the state capitol of Illinois before it was moved to Springfield.

See junction for the 1938 aerial photos. These would be the facilities in the triangle formed by the two railroads and 6th Street.

By the mid 1960s, the above buildings had been replaced by "a depot on the corner."

Dave Durham posted two photos with the comment: "Vandalia Depot and Interlocking on the IC charter line; that wig-wag is in some lucky railfans collection no doubt!"
Jeremy J Schrader That wig-wag was stolen from the property after it was taken down.
Brady Hargrove The tower is still there but the depot burned several years ago --- beyond restoration, as there was nothing left to restore. Any structure on that spot would be a brand new building. Very sad. Vandalia is a nice town to visit, however. The IC charter line doesn't extend much farther from here, anymore, as most of it has been abandoned and torn up. Is it ironic, that the charter line went into history while the Chicago line continues to prosper as the CN? Thank you, Dave Durham, for posting this.
Bill Edrington The tower is the headquarters for the present-day Vandalia Railroad and looks a lot better now than it did in the 1991 photo, but the poor old depot is another story. I don’t know who owns the property, but they really need to either do something with the burned-out shell or put it out of its misery.

Barry Simich posted four  photos with the comment: "These are pictures taken by me of the Vandalia IC Depot. All were taken in Oct 1994 with the exception of the lower right which was 5 years later."
[Dave Durham added photos of other depots along the IC in the comments.]

It appears a building has been built on the IC's RoW. The remaining track would be CSX/Pennsy

David Forbes: Was also a Radio Shack in the 80s before it was a restaurant.
[Another comment indicated the restaurant burned.]
