[That is the widest coal lift structure I have seen. They must have run a lot of coal through that tower.]

Pennsylvania Railroad 2-10-0 Decapod, I1 class, These old I1 class Hippo's lasted until about the end of steam operations on the Pennsy. Many of them continued to be operated on the Elmira Branch until the late 1950's.

I wonder how many coal tower complexes Altoona had.

Here is a photo by Thomas Lynam that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during February of 1949. It was published originally in Robert L. Emerson's 1984 book entitled "Allegheny Passage: An Illustrated History Of Blair County," page 75.
Thomas C. Ayers Photo Caption: "The sight of clouds billowing out of a passing steam engine vanished shortly after these two photos were made, as the newer diesel engine edged its older sister out of commission. Both the J-1a steam engine (top) and the EMD diesels (not shown) ~ nicknamed 'covered wagons' ~ were photographed in Altoona's Pennsy yard in 1949." This photo was taken just East of the 7th Street Bridge.
