Michigan City, IN: CSS&SB (South Shore) Shops

(Satellite, (I'm guessing this is where these shops were))

For many years, Shops was the site of miracles on a daily basis. Prior to the arrival of the "New" equipment in 1984, the CSS&SB was running the venerable 1926 Pullman-built cars ordered by Samuel Insull. The equipment was old, but Shops performed miracles on a daily basis to keep the cars running. This became known as "The Miracle of Michigan City"!

Mitch Markovitz It was called the "Genius department."

John Mier Street running in Michigan City will be ending in a few years. One of the few places you can still see it.

The Chicago South Shore & South Bend acquired several NYC motors to build their 700 series motors. The photo shows NYC 318 partially cannibalized on December 26, 1963 at the South Shore, Michigan City, Indiana Shops. It was built by ALCO-GE at 2010 hp with C+C trucks (three powered axle trucks) in 1930. A photo showing South Shore 700s is here.
Bruce Moffat: A total of 10. Seven ran. The other three were used for parts. Except for the first two, the South Shore gave them raised cab roofs.

Chicago South Shore and South Bend line car 1100 built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1926 as IR Trolley 376 and rebuilt as a line car in 1947. Photo taken at the Michigan City Shops.
Arthur House: When on the Indiana Railroad (the interurban system that operated 1930-1941) the car was one of two that included a Railway Post Office.
Jill Bernard: What is on the roof?
Marty Bernard: Jill Bernard It's a line car for working on the overhead wire that provides the electricity to power the train cars. I assume there is a fixed ladder in the inside to get to the top. What you see over the top front of the car is the place for the workers to stand. It raises up and maybe moves side to side. I worked on a line car at a museum in Southern California. Mainly fixed the inside latter to the roof.
The platform on the roof is all wood so if they touch the wire they are not grounded.
Bob Sherwood: Now preserved at the IRM.

A "line bus" as opposed to a line car. Probably once used to fix the wire above street running and it could easily get out of the way of trains. But it had high-rail wheels too. Looks by the snow around it, it had not been used for awhile. My guess is that is Roger Puta and Rick Burn in the distance.
Bob Harbison: Look closer... Highrail gear, not just street running. It went anywhere it needed to go.
Bob Harris: This was an Arlington & Fairfax railbus. The South Shore Line bought it for the construction of the East Chicago Bypass. The South Shore Line equipment ledger shows that it was built by Evans in 1937. There is no retirement date from the South Shore Line listed in the ledger for this piece of equipment.

Mitch Markovitz: The "Fairfax." Purchased to do line work on the East Chicago relocation.

CSS&SB 503 in South Bend, IN on Jan. 27, 1964. The side reads "Fast Emergency Package Service", "South Shore Railroad".
Jon Roma: When I first rode the South Shore in the early Seventies, they still had baggage and LCL service, and space for such in their combines. I'm sure I saw this car, but I don't remember if it was still in service at the time.
Kevin Farrell: Former Indiana RR RPO.
