Marion, OH: Erie Roundhouse, Railyard and Union Tank Car Company

When looking west down the CSX Mt. Victory Subdivision you can clearly see the CSX Marion Yard but from ground level the scale of the yard can not be appreciated.

The yard was once a major classification yard for the Erie Railroad and was the location of the diesel shops for the system's freight diesel fleet. Evidence of the Erie can clearly be seen with the foundation of the roundhouse still visible on the center right.

Today, CSX uses the yard to switch blocks of autoracks, locals and set outs for thru trains. The yard is also used by Union Tank Car Company to store tank cars. The plan is just off camera to the right. On the left, the Whirlpool plant, which is not served by rail, can be seen.

Dustin Gray: Fun fact (maybe) about this yard. It was built on a swamp and was scheduled to be re-built by the Erie Lackawanna until Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Money was diverted from the project to the east coast after the hurricane to repair damages to the EL in New York and New Jersey. The EL never recovered financially after that and it led to a last minute ticket into Conrail!

The Erie railyard is now used by the Union Tank Car Company. It is served by CSX because CSX has the Erie route east of Marion and the Big Four route west of Marion.
