Owosso, MI: Steam Railroading Institute/GTW Backshop and Roundhouse

There are Facebook pages for the steam excursions and another for the backshop activities.

The Pere Marquette 1225 owned by the SRI is the largest steam locomotive ever used in Michigan. They have also restored the C&NW 175. [MichiganSteamTrain]

The GLC was bought from the Tuscola Saginaw Bay Railways (TSBR) in Mar 2006. The TSBR owned the Ann Arbor route and the GTW "car and locomotive shop buildings, storage and work equipment repair facilities, central dispatch and administrative offices." [glcrailroad_history]

The Pere Marquette 1225 moves onto the turntable at the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan on 12/10/23.

Greg Bunce posted several photos with the comment:
I was fortunate to be able to take a tour of the Ann Arbor Backshop in February 1983. Inside was a time capsule of machinery that would be familiar to a machinist in 1925.
Bill Chumack Is this where the 1225 was for awhile?
Gregg Richard Yes. It was in fact the same month these were taken that 1225 got delivered here.
Gregg Richard Owosso, MI. All the machinery was used again not long after these photos were taken to rebuild 1225. It’s now stored by SRI who tore it down in 2000.
[I assume SRI is the Steam Railroading Institute.]

I included a lot of the surrounding land to capture the railroad names. The NYC was the Michigan Central route. The railyard and Ann Arbor on the north side and GTW on the south side so it was easy for the TSBR to use the GTW shops with the Ann Arbor route.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
PM1225 is now free of all its wheels and sitting on jackstands to permit a thorough inspection and running gear overhaul in partnership with FMW Solutions.
Our thanks goes out to McNally-Nimergood Crane Rentals for working with us to get this incredible milestone underway!

Here is 4-5 hours of work (and countless hours of preparation) rewheeling Pere Marquette 1225, compressed into 3 1/2 minutes. Thanks very much to FMW Solutions, McNally-Nimergood Crane Rentals, as well as our staff and volunteers for a job well done.
But there's still a lot left to do before she steams. Volunteers are needed for cleaning, painting and help in reassembly. For volunteer opportunities please call us at Phone: (989) 725-9464 or email info@michigansteamtrain.com

The video above is the one mentioned in this article.

An early morning view of Steam Railroading Institute’s Pere Marquette 1225 as it sits on the turntable at Owosso, Michigan. It was being serviced by crews before it backed up to the ash pit in preparation for another day of pulling the North Pole Express between Owosso and Ashley, Michigan, along the Great Lakes Railroad on December 17th, 2023.
According to their website, Pere Marquette 1225, the largest and most impressive piece in the Steam Railroading Institute’s collection, is one of the largest operating steam locomotives in Michigan. The 1225 was built in October of 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio for the Pere Marquette Railway. It’s part of the National Register of Historic Structures and is renowned for its role in the 2004 Warner Brothers Christmas Classic, THE POLAR EXPRESS™. 1225’s blueprints were used as the prototype for the locomotive image as well as its sounds to bring the train in the animated film to life!
